Projects

Sweet Auburn Works has been active in the preservation of historic structures and the growth of local businesses. Some of our recent activities include:
  • Commissioning the Urban Land Insititute to conduct a Technical Assistance Panel focusing on retail strategies in Sweet Auburn (see draft report here)
  • Co-sponsoring a collaborative community-driven process to update the zoning regulations of the Sweet Auburn neighborhood (Chapter 20C) MLK, Jr. Landmark District
  • Successfully advocating for the protection of the Trio Laundry building from being demolished and participating in efforts to preserve and adaptively re-use the building.
  • Supporting the preservation movement that resulted in the preservation and successful restoration of the Atlanta Daily World Building
  • Sponsoring and supporting ‘tactical enhancements’ of buildings and lots, as well as neighborhood clean-up events in partnership with neighborhood partners.
  • Developing a protocol and system for tracking Atlanta Urban Design Commission applications from the District and providing feedback/comments as warranted
  • Hosting a technical assistance seminar for area businesses to take advantage of the Auburn Avenue Opportunity Zone
  • Helping local property managers secure a total of $900,000 worth of façade improvement grants through the Eastside Tax Allocation District to support the transformation of 12 buildings, which is resulting in $2.7 million worth of investment.
  • In partnership with Invest Atlanta and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District, SAW has received a Tourism Product Development Grant from the State of Georgia which is being used to support a digital media augmented reality application prototype for Auburn Avenue.
  • Co-sponsoring the Interagency Bankers Roundtable event with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), in an effort to bridge the gap between bankers, developers, and local business owners regarding community development.
  • Providing technical support to a number of local property managers, business owners and developers
